The Mercy of God

While reading John Damascus I came across this passage

God’s goodness is revealed in that He did not disregard the frailty of His handiwork, but was moved with compassion for him in his fall, and stretched forth His hand to him

St. John of Damascus, Exposition of the Orthodox Faith, Book III

How merciful is God. Seeing humanity in its fallen state, He did not abandon us to the consequences of our sin. Instead, He was moved with compassion, stretched out His hand toward us, and entered His own creation to redeem it. The Incarnation is not only a display of God’s power, but of His immeasurable mercy and love.
